Prof. Kanis is director of the Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases at Sheffield and Professor at the Catholic University of Australia.
His interest in bone disease has covered basic research, clinical research, health technology assessment, epidemiology and health economics.
He is an author of more than 1000 scientific publications and a Royal Society of Medicine Award Winner for his Textbook on Osteoporosis. He is the Editor in Chief of ‘Osteoporosis International’ and ‘Archives of Osteoporosis’ and sits on the Editorial Board of several peer review journals. He is a long-standing advisor for Government Departments and non-Governmental organisations in several countries. He founded the European Foundation for Osteoporosis (now the International Osteoporosis Foundation-IOF) in 1988 and was Chairman of its Scientific Advisory Board until 1998. He served as President of IOF for 10 years until 2017. He coordinates and participates in many international research collaborations and has served on the project management team of several international research programmes (e.g. SCOPE, MEDOS, WHO, EVOS, EPOS, Osteomen, FRAX, EVA, Do Health, SCOOP).
