Jean-Marc Kaufman obtained his MD degree and his PhD degree at the Ghent University in Belgium. He is board certified in Endocrinology and in Nuclear Medicine. Following a postdoctoral research fellowship in reproductive physiology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, he joined the staff of the clinical department of Internal Medicine at the Ghent University Hospital, where he headed the clinical department of Endocrinology from 2003 to 2014 and the Laboratory for Hormonology from 1995 to 2014, and where he established and headed a multidisciplinary Unit for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Diseases (1994 – 2014).
He was appointed professor of medicine at the Ghent University where he is past chair of the university department of Internal Medicine (2010-2014). He is presently professor emeritus at the Ghent University where he is pursuing clinical and research activities. Main research interests are in the assessment and action of sex steroids in health and disease, with particular focus on bone health and aging in men.
He is a collaborator to the WHO Collaborating Center for Public Health Aspects of Musculoskeletal Health and Ageing at the University of Liège. He is board member of ESCEO and member of the Committee of Scientific Advisers (CSA) of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). He is recipient of the 2014 Herbert Fleisch ESCEO-IOF Medal. He is (co)author of more than 330 publications in international peer reviewed journals.
